Our First Cruise

Kevin and Michelle were invited last August by their dear friends, the Dickens, to go on an Eastern Caribbean cruise from March 3-10, leaving from Ft Lauderdale. Having never cruised together, not counting their lives in general, they had to go. We spent 7 magical days on the Emerald Princess with stops at ports in the Bahamas, St Marteen, St Thomas, and the Grand Turk. Each island was unique with great scenery and activities. The beach on the French side of St Marteen was the most beautiful we have ever seen. We snorkeled on two islands, played with sting rays near Grand Turk and enjoyed the friendship of our company of eleven. The food was fattening and delicious. The Great House on St Thomas had incredible views of 20 other US Virgin Islands. The three comedians on the ship were in great form and the other shows were entertaining and enjoyable, except the crude one where we walked out. (Oh well, you can't expect perfection in this life.) We enjoyed the break from our house of 14 persons and were reminded why we fell in love in the first place. It was a great trip and we didn't feel guilty leaving the rest of our family behind.

Fall Break: October 09

We had a great fall break this past October, 2009 when we flew to Cancun and stayed 3 nights in Playa Del Carmen and two nights in Cancun. The trip was with my gorgeous wife and our three youngest sons, Taylor, Morgan and Jaden. We saw the ruins of Tulum, the ruins of Coba, went para sailing, a first for all of us, spent the day at Xcaret, that magical aqua-archeological park. The two underground rivers were awesome and the night show was amazing. We also took the Jungle Tour on our two passenger speed boats in the lagoon between Cancun and the Caribbean, and swam in a magnificent cenote, a large underground cave full of water and limestone formations. We enjoyed perfect weather and great food. We swam and played for hours and stayed in two spectacular hotels. We felt bad that only 3 children were available to go with us, but then the older ones have already had plenty of fun. On our way home

we spent the day with Becky and DJ Morgan in Houston and got to see our great Sowards' relatives in Texas, the Houston Space Museum, and had a great Mexican dinner at Pappasitos, probably Livi's favorite place. It was a wonderful trip with great memories spent with family and the wonders of the Yucatan.

August 09: Yellowstone; It never gets old

Last weekend Kevin took Nate, Taylor and Morgan to Idaho and Yellowstone. Ashley and Randy came with us. We stayed at the Island Park cabin a night, took in dinner and the play, "Less Miserables" at the Macks Inn Playhouse, attended church and spent 2 beautiful days in Yellowstone, driving the south and the north loops. We saw the Grand Canyon and the lower and upper falls of the Yellowstone River, the Lake, and Hayden Valley on Saturday and Tower Falls and Mammoth Hot Springs on Sunday. This grand old park never gets boring and inspires every time you go. We also took a quick side trip to Quake Lake, on the 50 year anniversary of the great Yellowstone earthquake of '59. It was a great road trip. It was very nice to spend two evenings with Kevin's parents in quiet conversation while Ashley hosted the boys.

Italy and France; Nathan's graduation trip

During the first two weeks of June for Nathan's graduation, Kevin, Michelle, Hailey, and Nathan embarked on a travel experience more satisfying than any other we have ever done . The art work, sculptures, and architecture of these two great countries defies description. Paris (3 days), Venice (3 days), Florence (3 days), and Rome (5 days) were all amazing and surpassed everything we had ever heard of them. We toured the Louvre, the Orsay, and Rodin Museums and took evening rides on the Seine along the Notre Dame Cathedral and Eiffel Tower in Paris. . We saw Michelangelo's, Verrocchio's, and Donatello's Davids in Florence and Bernini's David in Rome. They are all amazing. We visited St Mark's Basilica and Square in Venice, toured the amazing Doge Palace, and rode gondolas on the canals. The Florence Duomo Basilica, Baptistry, and Museum are amazing and we didn't want to leave the Uffizi gallery or the Pitti Palace. Florence is too wonderful to describe. The sculptures on Italy's public buildings not worthy of museum placement are better generally than anything we have ever seen in our country.

We never dreamed we could see so much of Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rafael, Bernini, Donatello, Cortona, and other Renaissance masters or the incredible art and treasures of the Medici family. We saw ancient and modern Rome. The Coleseum, Pantheon, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, Forum, etc. continue to amaze centuries later. The Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, and the four large Basilicas in Rome took our breaths away. The Borghese Gallery in Rome had "Apollo and Daphne" and scores of other masterpieces. It was an amazing and unforgettable trip. We can't wait to go back someday.

June - August 09

We haven't posted b/c we have been so incredibly busy. Among our highlights: we have had one wedding and two wedding receptions in our back yard; Kevin, Michelle, Hailey and Nathan traveled to France and Italy the first two weeks of June. This will be the subject of another post. While we were in Europe, Taylor went to So. Cal. for a fun orchestra tour, performing at grade schools and at Disneyland. He saw a Dodgers game and ate at Medieval Times.

Kevin and the 3 Sutterfield boys attended the Sowards reunion at Bear Lake, Laketown, Utah in mid June. It was great to see everyone from Paula's family and enjoy the wave runners, and Pickelville Playhouse's production of "Annie Get Your Gun." Lousie and Scott were the perfect hosts. In early July, Michelle went with two of her sisters and her friend to see Hailey and stay two nights at Zions Ponderosa, near the east entrance of Zions National Park. They wall climbed, 4 wheeled and paint balled and enjoyed the girls retreat. The next month we went to Idaho for a wonderful family reunion to celebrate the honor Kevin's folks had at being named grand marshals of the Fremont County Pioneer Days parade from July 23-25. We had a double trailer float with 60 of Kevin's parents' posterity riding behind the grand marshal car. What a great memory for all of us. During the July 4th weekend, we rented a nice condominium in Park City and played with Michelle's sister's, Stephanie, family. We saw an outdoor concert and great fireworks at The Canyons Resort on July 3, and enjoyed a full day of activities the next day at Park City Mountain Resort. The Alpine Slide and Coaster, wall climbing, miniature golf, etc. were great. We had five birthdays in 30 days with Morgan, Jaden and Kevin in July and Taylor and Nathan in early August. Kevin took the three Sutterfield boys to Island Park for a day and to Yellowstone for two days while Michelle hung out with her parents, and her two out of state sisters and their families last weekend. Nathan received his endowment during an incredible live session at the Manti temple in July, and he has continued his temple service in Vernal, Provo (where he was able to baptize Hailey, Taylor and Morgan), Timpanogos, Salt Lake (where he saw his cousin married), and Rexburg, Idaho. We also visited the Oquirrh Mountain temple open house in early August as a family. Kevin, Nathan and Morgan also went to Vernal in July to visit Paula's mom and brother and his wife. It was great to see them in their homes and to go to dinner and to the temple with them. What an amazing summer.

year end school activities- May 09

Wow: May is busy when you have a quiver full of children who are school age. Dallin graduated from Snow College with honors. Taylor was inducted into the National Honor Society and had a solo in the choir performance. Morgan played percussion in the band concert, and he had a solo in the 8th grade choir. Jaden and Morgan both sang in the Jr High year end choir performance to our delight. Like Nate, Taylor and Dallin had great dates to the Art Ball. We had so much fun as a family (and had parent bragging rights) with our children this spring. Hailey was very busy and less than a week after her semester ended she went to Zions Ponderosa, a destination resort just east of Zions National Park, for a paid summer internship as an event coordinator. Alas, we don't have pictures of her because she left so fast, but we will post several when we post our Italy trip we took the first two weeks of June. Enjoy the pictures and videos. Morgan is in the hat. (I took some better videos but they are on my video camera.)

nate's amazing 30 days

Nathan had an amazing last 30 days. He graduated from Seminary where he served on the seminary council and gave one of the two student speeches at graduation. He graduated from high school with high honors and received academic scholarships to Snow College and BYU-Idaho. His picture was in the local paper several times for his many accomplishments and the year book had dozens of his activities. He had a great senior year. He took a beautiful girl to the Art Ball with Taylor and his date. He received his mission call to Rochester NY--Spanish speaking. We opened his call in our back yard with dozens of friends, family and neighbors. It was exciting and emotional. He went on a senior trip with Hailey, his mom, and his dad to Paris for 3 days, Venice for 3 days, Florence for 3 days, and Rome for 5 days. It was amazing. Finally, he was sustained to receive the Melchizedek priesthood on Fathers Day during our stake conference. Our hearts are full as we think of the blessing he has been to our family. We are attaching a few pictures of these events, except the European trip which will be posted later.

Lighthouses and Michigan

Michelle has always loved lighthouses for their beauty and the messages they bring of warnings, danger, light, hope, service, and stewardship to name a few. When we went to Michigan, we saw several which had been restored located on the banks of the second largest Great Lake, Huron. We are posting a few pictures of them and also of other beautiful areas of Michigan. We hope you enjoy them in some small way as we enjoyed them.

What a crazy two months. We had an amazing spring break in April to southern Utah. We drove a thousand miles and saw Hovenweep Nat'l Monument, Four Corners Geographical Site, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, and Natural Bridges Nat'l Monument. While it snowed in Springville, we enjoyed mild weather with some wind and unbelievable scenery in some of nature's most incredible places. We drove to the headwaters of Lake Powell, where the mighty Colorado and the ugly Dirty Devil Rivers meet at the overlook of Hite marina. We stayed one night in Bluff at a wonderful bed and breakfast, and woke up after the second night to a flat tire in Hanksville after hitting a jack rabbit the night before. We drove home through Capitol Reef National Park and then on to Ephraim where we saw Dallin's last performance with the LDSingers. It was a great trip. Nathan and Taylor went to Preference dance with two cute girls in March and Nathan went to the Junior prom in April with another beautiful girl. Morgan and Jaden went to two merit badge pow wows in consecutive months, one at BYU and one in our stake. Last week, Kevin took Michelle with him to Michigan where he had a deposition in Ann Arbor. Naturally, he elected to go early and drive 800 miles to see a state he was unfamiliar with. We drove up the Lake Huron Coast from Detroit, went to the Mackinaw Bridge over the straight between Huron and Lake Michigan and took the ferry to Mackinac Island, an amazing small island that outlawed motor vehicles 80 years ago. Everyone rides bikes or horses there. We rode the ferry there, took a carriage ride and toured the Grand Hotel, one of the world's finest hotels. We saw dozens of lighthouses and drove back to Detroit. After spending one afternoon seeing GM's headquarters and the river front of the Detroit River, we finished our trip in Dearborn visiting the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. The last two are amazing. The Museum is as large as any Smithsonian and has 100 years of cars, planes, trains, farming equipment, and an area devoted to Liberty. We saw the Rosa Park bus, JFK's limo where he was assassinated, the rocking chair where Pres Lincoln sat the night he was assassinated and dozens of other amazing artifacts. The village had homes of famous Americans and reconstructed working pioneer shops such as a printing press, saw mill, grist mill, pottery plant, glass blowing plant, and other delights. We even got to ride in a 1914 Ford Model T, touring model. It was a blast and an education. Kudos to Henry Ford who wanted his posterity to understand life in the 1800s and early 1900s in America. Dallin graduated with honors from Snow College and Hailey is off for the summer to Zions Ponderosa, a destination dude ranch, etc near the eastern border of Zions National Park. Nathan should get his mission call this next week. We are enjoying our lives and hoping our good fortune continues.

We have been busy this last month. First, we rented three snowmobiles and stayed overnight at Daniel's Summit Lodge in Wasatch County over Civil Rights weekend. It was a blast. We sat in the hot tub and all went outside for a group photo in our swim trunks, except Nathan who forgot his suit and had to swim in his skivvies. Taylor and Jaden have been playing hard at basketball. Nathan took a cute girl to Sweetheart's dance last night and found out today he was accepted to BYU. Morgan and Jaden had a winter camp out last Friday night and got snowed on all night. Hailey and Dallin came home for the President's weekend and Michelle flew to Cody Wyoming to help her sister Maralee with her new baby. Nathan and Taylor performed with the high school choirs earlier this week. The theme was "An Evening with Love." They were great and Hailey was able to attend with her new friend Addison. I am including some pictures of the events. Our children bring us pleasure.

Nathan and Mr Springville

Nathan spent the week in the high school's "Mr. Springville" contest, a talent contest for the senior boys. After making the first cut, the young men have to immerse themselves in daily contests and creativity. Each day had a different activity; poster day, homemade t shirt day, costume day, leg day followed by the final night where the boys did talent, swim suit, dance, interview and tuxedo escort. When last night was over, he came in 2d, the first runner up. We thought he won, but were sure proud of his efforts. It was a great night to be a parent. Michelle, Dallin and Hailey all helped him with their talents. I am attaching a few photos of his night, including the winning poster and a video of a small part of his dancing. He won first for poster, first for costume, and took third in t shirt and third in best legs.

The rest of us are doing more boring activities. Hailey and Dallin returned to school with busy schedules, Landon was made a senior companion in his area and is doing great. Taylor is playing basketball and skiing with Jaden. Morgan is working hard in school and playing the piano. We are all well. Kevin was released from teaching institute after 2 1/2 years and will miss the opportunity. We have enjoyed having Kevin's nephew and niece an their two girls with us for the last 10 days while they are between homes. It is fun to have babies around us again. They sure are easy to love.

Christmas 08

We had a great Christmas. All our single children were here for the week and Ashley and her husband, Randy, and his two girls came to stay overnight. The young adults got clothes and Hailey had some great gifts for everyone from Jerusalem. Dallin bought some new skis and bindings and a camera on the post Christmas sales. Practical Nathan wanted luggage and camera for his mission next summer. Taylor got clothes and Morgan got an MP3 player and scooter while Jaden received a go cart type of scooter and a large plane model. The family present was a Wii. Everyone was excited by the surprise except for Kevin who thinks his kids "nerd" too much already. Our highlight was talking to Elder Landon on the phone. He sounds good and had some fun stories to tell. We have enjoyed seeing all of our kids this year, except our missionary, for the Holidays. We have had much snow last week and dug out many of our neighbors. Kevin has enjoyed the 4 wheeler snow blade attachment immensely. We had a lovely Christmas Eve family program and sang christmas songs and read Luke 2, etc. We shared our feelings about each other and the Savior. It was Kevin and Michelle's highlight of the season. We enjoyed some great holiday parties with family and Kevin's work and were treated to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Christmas concert for the 5 consecutive year. We feel so blessed and hope our good fortunes continue.

Thanksgiving and 1st week of Dec

We have had a busy two weeks. More leaves and more work, but lots of play. We hosted Thanksgiving at our home for 40 Sutterfield relatives. It was great. The teenage boys played in the church turkey bowl while we set up and worked. After the meal, we went to James Bond or Bolt, depending upon the age. Friday was bowling and Saturday was Kevin and the 5 boys going to the Jazz game for the 6 tickets, 6 hot dogs for $90.00 special. It was fun, but the Jazz played poorly.
This past weekend was Friday night at Snow College for Dallin's LDSingers performance; Saturday a.m. at our ward Christmas breakfast party: Saturday afternoon with the Sutterfield cousins party; Saturday night at the Choir dinner watching Nathan and Taylor with the Gparents and Morgan and Jaden in the audience cheering them on; Sunday Kevin taught the Relief Society about Joseph Smith, and Sunday night we did the Adult Dinner at Jana's house with the 5 Sutterfield siblings and our spouses, and our parents who spent the weekend with us on their way to Yuma for the winter. I don't remember eating more in two days in my life since the Thanksgivings weekends we had in the mission field, but in those days, I could handle 4,000 calories a day without consequence. We also had a family party for Dallin's 22 birthday just to break up our otherwise "boring" Saturday. Oh well, what a great two weeks. Our children are growing, but making us proud. Hailey is home in 11 days, and Dallin comes home this weekend. Landon is having great success and being blessed in New York. He and his companion are having 5 baptisms this coming Saturday and he is reading the scriptures and working hard.

The other big news is that on December 4, 20o8, Kevin had 7 birdies in one round of golf, a record for him that is likely not to be seen again.

Howdy, All are well. We don't have any more kids or grandkids and compared to many of our friends, we are way behind, but we will catch up. We have been busy with leaves and Nathan's play and Morgan and Jaden's merit badge pow wow. Our two youngest got three merit badges with our help. Taylor barely missed out on making the sophomore bkb team, but is planning to play city league. Nate has been in the high school's musical, "Thoroughly Modern Millie." He plays one of the Chinese kinappers. It is a great production with dozens of participants and dozens of muscians. We are hosting Thanksgiving at our home in 10 days and should have a great time. Landon is having great success in NY and has been teaching and has two baptisms scheduled. Dallin was in the musical production of the Snow Institute, "LD Singers." He performed 11 times over the last three days. It was great to see him perform. We are attaching a few seconds of their work and a picture or two. See you soon. Kevin and Michelle

kauai and November 08

We had a perfect time in Kauai. I was able to play the Prince Course three times and Popui Bay Course once. Mom took the catamaran with the Caywoods and Mary Ellen and had a great time going down the Na Pali Coast. She saw several dolphins. We kayaked, went to marvelous beaches, saw the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, ate well, went on a gorgeous ATV 3 hour ride and enjoyed the 2-3 a.m rooster crows outside our condominium every morning. We were convinced the rooster, who had a brood of hens, was on Utah time and not 4 hours earlier in Kauai. He woke us up every morning hours before we wanted to be awake. Here we are at Barking Sands Beach. I am the skinny one.

We are doing well here. The 4 boys at home are all on the honor roll this first term and we are working hard every Saturday raking, piling, and processing leaves. The fall leaves work is in full scale production; from Halloween until the first weekend of December, we have at least one overflowing trailer full of green and brown waste to take to the green plant in Springville. We hired Lorenzo's son and grandson to help us yesterday. We filled the trailer twice. We spent 6 hours and had a lot of complaining, but had T Bone Chinese food to end the day. Lorenzo's son, Miguel, has started taking the missionary lessons from the Spanish elders after mom sent his name to the missionary department during the Hill Cumorah weeks.

Dallin has been home from Snow College an average of every two weeks. He is doing well in school and having a great time there. Ashley is enjoying her new life in Idaho.
I marvel at how the Lord has blessed Landon in his first area: regular teaching, a good companion, faithful, charitable and generous members, new converts, several serious investigators, and the chance to read the scriptures. I can't imagine anything better for a first area. He has gained 15 pounds which means he better go back to eating Raimen noodles and work out on P day. Hailey is loving Jerusalem so much that she never writes us. She said if it wasn't for her family, she would live there. Thanks a lot Hailey.
